Don't lose £000's warns conservatory firm

"In the past months, we've come across an alarming increase in the installation of conservatories by shoddy, disreputable companies," says Steve Thorogood, Director of Admiral Windows and Conservatories Ltd.

The company, based in Alconbury near Huntingdon, has been called in to advise on and correct work that has seen one couple lose literally thousands of pounds as the walls on their conservatory crumbled around them.

The customers involved have asked Admiral to send out a warning for people to be on their guard and to always check the reputation of the company they choose.

"There is too much risk involved not to research thoroughly the company that you are about to give a large amount of money to," says Steve Thorogood. "The fitting of a conservatory is a sophisticated process demanding skilled building trade specialists."

In recent years, some manufacturers of windows have become involved in the installing of conservatories but without having the necessary building trade experience. Many of these firms sub-contract to other companies and therefore lose control of the overall project.

Admiral, a dedicated conservatory and window specialist since 1989, has issued the following check-list to help in appointing the right company:

· Check the company handles all the work from start to finish and retains overall control.

· Make sure you have one person who becomes your conservatory co-ordinator. They should give you progress reports on how the installation is progressing, when tradesmen will be visiting and answer any queries promptly and courteously.

· Who will sort out planning permission and advise on building regulations? In 90 per cent of cases, these aren't required. But your installer must know the legal requirements.

· What about heating and cooling? Cool in summer, warm in winter. A conservatory that can't comfortably be used all year round is a bad investment.

· After sales service. Check that there is a helpline and direct follow-through
